While Turok Evolution is an OK game, I am trapped in a love/hate relationship with it.
I freely admit that I am not a professional when it comes to first person shooters, but this game is very difficult and frustrating for me. For one reason or another I keep dying and sometimes I even deserve it. When this happens, I learn from my mistake, usually see where I could have gone or what could have been done differently, and I improve. This is the good scenario. However, all too often I have fallen prey to the engine's shortcomings and this kind of dying drives me crazy. Just now I finally got through a difficult sequence, then I died by taking falling damage because it is so difficult to remain connected to a rope overhead and crossing into another area. I shut off the game after that.
The graphics look solid, the story is fine (I know nothing about the Turok universe), and there is plenty of flora and fauna around to keep the settings interesting. The weapons are pretty slick and each has a good level of usefulness.
Unfortunately, the aiming, the poor jump mechanic, the constant falling damage because of slippery ledges, ladders, and overhead ropes, and the long distance between saves/check points is really dragging this title down to average at best.
