Uncharted is a stunningly beautiful action-packed adventure worthy of the best summer blockbuster flicks.
I had heard that this was supposed to be a good game, but I had no idea what to expect going into it. I had not seen any of the pre-release hype and had not read any reviews.
The game is like a big-budget action movie. You have some great scenes, plenty of humor, a lost treasure, an antagonist or two, death-defying leaps, plenty of gun battles with goons, and of course some fantastic visuals and scenery.
Since this game focuses on the action and the story, the levels are all perfectly linear so far. You enter an area, solve a jumping puzzle and/or engage enemies in combat, then move on down a single path to the next sequence.
The combat is great. Naughty Dog took some inspiration from Gears of War, providing a cover system. However, the controls require one button for taking/leaving cover and another button for vaulting over your current cover spot (assuming you can). This is not very intuitive and has caused me plenty of trouble, though it is not usually fatal. In general, the cover system does not play as tightly as the one in Gears, so it loses some points there.
One great feature of combat is the melee action. You can close in on your foes and execute some slick combos, killing enemies quickly. The camera focuses in on the two characters involved and the game goes into slow motion, which is always satisfying.
The jumping and platforming, which looks very smooth and has some really nice animations, is nonetheless fairly straightforward and none too challenging. I have died only a few times during the puzzles and this usually is due to impatience or overconfidence rather than difficulty.
Overall, I am having a blast with Uncharted. It tells a really fun, engaging story. It provides solid combat and nice platforming action. This is by far the best PS3 game that I have played to date and, though probably not a killer app for the platform, definitely qualifies as a must-have game.
PS: The game features practically zero loading after the initial title screen, a feature sorely missed in many titles. Thank you Naughty Dog!
