The venerable franchise returns, bringing familiar, comfortable gameplay, but so far failing to deliver anything noteworthy.
I started Halo 4 a while back, then recently returned to the campaign midway. I am still trying to figure out what is going on, but it does not matter much, because i know that my goal is ultimately to plow forward and kill anything that moves.
This simplification of mindset has allowed me to focus more on the moment-to-moment shooting, but removed any care for the ongoing narrative. In one case, Cortana was telling me about how these new creatures were composed of something, and I was beyond uncaring to the point of contempt, as I poured hot lead into the enemy combatants.
This reductionist, mechanical gameplay approach is not how I want to experience Halo, but so far I cannot get past it. I will set the game aside, since currently games like Doom are emerging with extremely positive reviews. Maybe Halo Reach or 5 will return the series to it's previously glorified position in my collection. There is always hope...
