I was hooked on Halo from the moment the title screen appeared and the enthralling chant music started.
I was late getting on the XBox bandwagon. I had a PS2, but never bothered to get an XBox. I saw instantly the mistake I had made when I fired Halo up for the first time.
The story grips you from the outset and doesn't let go until the end. I was compelled at every turn to press on, to move forward, to fight toward the next objective. The game captivated my attention and drove me ever onward, slogging through brutal fight after brutal fight.
Everything this game did, it did perfectly. I had always held that FPS games on consoles could never compete with the PC, simply because the controller could never match the twitch-gaming ability of the mouse/keyboard interface. Somehow, Halo proved me wrong.
The one downfall of Halo is the lack of multiplayer support over the Internet. While this made for some excellent Halo parties, it was still a shortcoming of the game and keeps it from a perfect score... something that its successor, Halo 2, achieves.
